Digital Substation is an independent engineering media and education platform dedicated to the digitalisation of electric power systems. We bring together a publication, professional training programmes, and a growing global community of engineers — all focused on one domain: the standards, protocols, and engineering practices that define modern digital substations.
Our work covers IEC 61850, IEC 60870, IEC 61588 / PTP, IEC 62439 / PRP/HSR, TASE.2 / ICCP, cybersecurity for substation automation, and the wider ecosystem of technologies that power engineers need to work confidently in today's digital grid environment.
The people behind our content and courses are practising engineers, including active members of IEC TC57 Working Group 10 — the body responsible for developing and maintaining the IEC 61850 standard itself. Together, we have trained more than 4,500 engineers worldwide.
Engineering Publication
At the core of what we do is Digital Substation — an engineering publication covering IEC 61850 automation, relay protection, substation communications, and digital grid intelligence. We publish practical field notes, standards explainers, hands-on guides, analytics, event coverage, and implementation insights for power-system professionals. Content is available in both English and Russian.
Professional Training
We offer a full spectrum of professional training formats designed to meet engineers wherever they are in their digital substation journey — from first exposure to IEC 61850 all the way to advanced commissioning, maintenance, and system engineering.
In-person workshops are our most intensive format. Held at locations in Russia, Belarus, the UAE, and other countries on request, each workshop combines lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions on real multi-vendor equipment. Participants configure, test, and troubleshoot actual systems in guided exercises, building practical skills that can be applied immediately on the job.
We also offer in-house corporate training: our programme is modular, and we can design a format — from a focused one-day overview to a full week of practical work — tailored to your team's background, the specific equipment you work with, and the challenges of your organisation. Our training lab is fully mobile and can be shipped to virtually any location worldwide.
Online self-paced courses are available in English and Russian and can be started at any time. They range from focused two-hour introductions to comprehensive multi-day programmes, and are structured so engineers can study without disrupting their working schedule. All courses combine video lectures with supporting materials. Optional add-ons include personal consultations with the instructor and a named completion certificate.
Live online sessions and webinars are offered periodically on focused technical topics, providing interactive engagement with instructors and with peers from across the industry.
Our training topics span the full range of digital substation engineering: IEC 61850 communication models and data modelling, SCL engineering and system configuration workflows, process bus design and commissioning, local area network architecture and redundancy, time synchronisation, IEC 60870 and related protocols, network traffic analysis, and cybersecurity fundamentals for substation automation systems.
Who We Serve
Our audience includes protection and control engineers at utilities, system integrators, and equipment manufacturers; design and commissioning specialists; technical managers and specification writers; and students entering the power engineering field. We serve both the international English-speaking market and the Russian-language engineering community, with dedicated content streams and training programmes for each.
